We hope not! (But true sleuths are always guessing, right?) We have carefully crafted what would normally be a mystery novel into a six-part series. Just like in a mystery book, things may seem one way, but are often the opposite as you dig deeper and more information is revealed.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT FROM A MURDER MYSTERY BOOK?

The mystery is divided into six packages that arrive at your doorstep monthly. Each one contains information that introduces you to characters, sets the stage, and leads you through the story, but instead of on-page writing, you receive custom documents, puzzles and tools that are used to untangle the mystery in a way that makes you feel like the detective.

DO I NEED ACCESS TO THE INTERNET?

The majority of your time will be spent on deciphering the contents of the box you receive. You will need the internet to access a special site for members only. The site will give you confirmation that you are solving the mystery correctly and provide clues if you feel stuck.

IS THIS AN ESCAPE ROOM IN A BOX?

There are many puzzles that are similar to what you would find in an escape room, however this is a unique product that combines story, deduction and puzzles. We believe escape room fans will love it. Our mysteries are developed by engineers, accountants, graphic artists, teachers and escape room enthusiasts. The puzzles are much more in depth and since you don’t have a time limit, you get to really examine everything at your own pace.

DO I SOLVE THIS ALONE?

This mystery can be solved alone or with your friends and family. It’s a great reason to have a family night once a month or enjoy a get-together with a few friends and have great fun making progress through the mystery.

ARE THERE PUZZLES ARE IN EACH BOX?

Yes, we believe that good puzzles are important for an engaging experience. However, the puzzles are just one aspect of the mystery. Your powers of deduction from the documents themselves will be critical in solving who committed the crime.

RECOMMENDED AGES

Capture the Killer is family-friendly in terms of language and graphic content. Due to the fact that murder and other criminal activity is involved in the subject matter, most people might consider it PG13.

TIPS & WAYS TO DEEPEN THE EXPERIENCE

– Consider setting up a murder board where you can keep track of suspects, motives, opportunities and means.
– Don’t throw anything from each mystery series away until you have completed all six boxes. Sometimes you will refer to earlier box materials for solving things.
– Set aside an evening without distractions to enjoy the fun of immersing yourself in each chapter. Typically groups take one to three hours to solve a box, but everyone solves at their own pace.
– If you are turning it into a murder mystery party, consider costumes from the time period or plan food and drink that evokes the feeling of being in the story.
– Use hints if you are really stuck. You should feel challenged, but not frustrated!

DO I NEED TO BUY ALL SIX BOXES?

To get a complete mystery, yes. Each mystery is split into six “Chapters”. Each box contains a chapter and is like a book, in that they build on one another and culminate in the final solution at the end. They will be sent to you in a specific order. As a member, once you have finished a six-month series, the next series will automatically begin to ship.

WHAT DOES IS COST?

The fee is an automatic monthly membership charge.  Each box is approximately the cost of one escape room ticket.
Pay by the month: $35
Pay every six months: $165

CAN YOU SHIP MY NEXT BOX BEFORE MY REGULAR SHIP DATE?

At this time, we ship all subscriptions monthly only. We ship First Class – USPS. Our shipments go out EVERY TUESDAY! If you order on a Monday, we will ship your subscription next day. If a holiday lands on a Tuesday, we will ship the next available business day.

DO YOU SHIP INTERNATIONALLY?

We are now shipping internationally! For all international shipments, we require a 6 Month PrePay Subscription. Choosing this option will give you the largest discount as well.

You will be sent two shipments of 3 episodes to complete your mystery. Contact us at astrid@mht.capturethekiller.com for international shipping.

PAUSING MEMBERSHIP

You can pause your membership for 60 or 90 days. At the end of that time period, the subscription will begin to ship on your original ship date of the month. Any pause requests received after either the 25th or the 10th of the month will result in one more box in your series shipping. (See cancellation below.)

MEMBERSHIP CANCELLATION

You can cancel by logging in to your Capture The Killer account, going to Manage Subscriptions, and clicking “cancel plan” or by emailing our customer service team at astrid@mht.capturethekiller.com  *You will need to cancel at least 3 business days prior to renewal in order to prevent the next box from shipping.*

NOTE: You can cancel at any time, but if you purchased a 6-month membership or a 12-month membership, we can’t refund you the money for any boxes that you don’t use. You will still be sent all the boxes in order to fulfill your membership and from there, your account will not be renewed.
